Introduction to the verb graver
The English translation of the French verb graver is “to engrave” or “to carve.” It is pronounced as “grah-ver.”
Graver comes from the Latin word “gravis,” meaning “heavy” or “serious.” In everyday French, it is most often used in the Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait tense to express a past hypothetical action that is even further in the past. This tense is formed by using the subjunctive form of the auxiliary verb “avoir” or “être” followed by the past participle of the main verb.
