Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait (Subjunctive Pluperfect) Tense Conjugation of the French Verb modifier
Introduction to the verb modifier
The English translation of the French verb modifier is “to modify.” It is pronounced “moh-dee-fee-ay.”
The word “modifier” comes from the Latin word “modificare,” meaning “to limit, restrain, or measure.” In French, it is most often used as a regular -er verb, meaning it follows the same conjugation pattern as other verbs such as aimer (to love) or parler (to speak).
In everyday French, the verb modifier is commonly used in the Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait tense, which is used to express something that hypothetically should have happened in the past. This tense is formed by using the auxiliary verb “avoir” or “être” in the Imparfait tense, followed by the past participle of the main verb.
Three simple examples of how modifier is used in the Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait tense are:
-
J’aurais modifié mon comportement si j’avais su que ça te dérangeait.
(I would have modified my behavior if I had known it bothered you.) -
Elle aurait modifié son discours si elle avait été plus préparée.
(She would have modified her speech if she had been more prepared.) -
Nous aurions modifié notre plan si nous avions eu plus de temps.
(We would have modified our plan if we had more time.)
