Conditionnel Passé (Conditional Past) Tense Conjugation of the French Verb atteler
Introduction to the verb atteler
The English translation of the French verb atteler is “to harness” or “to hitch up”. It is pronounced “ah-tuh-lay”.
The word atteler comes from the Old French term “a telier”, meaning “to equip” or “to provide with tools”. It is most often used in everyday French to refer to the action of attaching a horse or other animal to a cart, plow, or other vehicle.
The Conditionnel Passé tense is used to express a hypothetical situation in the past, or to talk about something that could have happened but did not. It is formed by using the conditional of the auxiliary verb “avoir” or “être” and the past participle of the verb.
Here are three examples of atteler used in the Conditionnel Passé tense:
- Si j’avais suivi ton conseil, j’aurais attelé le cheval à la charrette. (If I had followed your advice, I would have harnessed the horse to the cart.)
- Nous aurions pu partir plus tôt si nous avions attelé le tracteur plus tôt. (We could have left earlier if we had hitched up the tractor earlier.)
- Elle aurait aimé faire une promenade en calèche, mais elle n’a pas pu atteler le cheval toute seule. (She would have liked to go for a carriage ride, but she couldn’t hitch up the horse by herself.)
