Conditionnel Présent (Conditional Present) Tense Conjugation of the French Verb aimer
Introduction to the verb aimer
The English translation of the French verb aimer is “to love” or “to like.” It is pronounced “EH-may” in the infinitive form.
The word aimer comes from the Latin verb amare, meaning “to love.” It is a regular -er verb and is one of the most commonly used verbs in the French language. It is often used to express feelings of affection or preference towards someone or something.
In everyday French, aimer is most often used in the Conditionnel Présent tense to express a hypothetical or uncertain situation. This tense is formed by using the conditional present conjugation of the verb “to have” (avoir) followed by the past participle of aimer, which is aimé.
Here are three simple examples of aimer in the Conditionnel Présent tense:
- Si j’avais plus de temps, j’aimerais voyager à travers le monde. (If I had more time, I would love to travel around the world.)
- Tu aimerais venir avec nous au cinéma ce soir ? (Would you like to come to the cinema with us tonight?)
- Nous aimerions avoir des nouvelles de notre famille en France. (We would love to hear from our family in France.)
In these examples, aimer is used to express a hypothetical desire or action in the present or future. It is often accompanied by the conditional tense of other verbs, as seen in the first and third example. In the second example, aimer is used to ask someone’s preference or willingness to do something.
