Introduction to the verb chaumer
The English translation of the French verb chaumer is “to leave fallow” or “to let lie fallow.” It is pronounced “shoh-may” in its infinitive form.
The word chaumer comes from the Old French word “chaume,” meaning “dry stalks” or “undergrowth.” It is most often used in agriculture to describe the practice of leaving a field unplanted and uncultivated for a period of time in order to allow it to rest and restore its nutrients.
In everyday French, chaumer is also used in the Passé Antérieur tense, which is used to talk about completed actions that took place before another action in the past. This tense is formed by using the auxiliary verb “avoir” or “être” in the imparfait tense followed by the past participle of the main verb.
