Introduction to the verb chaumer
The English translation of the French verb chaumer is “to idle/to be idle”. The infinitive form is pronounced “shoh-may”.
The word chaumer comes from the Old French word “chaum”, meaning “straw”, which was used to cover roofs. In the past, farmers would let their fields lie fallow and cover them with straw, hence the verb chaumer came to mean “to let a field lie fallow/to be idle”.
