Plus-que-parfait (Pluperfect) Tense Conjugation of the French Verb cajoler
Introduction to the verb cajoler
The English translation of the French verb cajoler is “to coax” or “to cajole.” It is pronounced as “kah-zho-lay” in its infinitive form.
The word cajoler comes from the Latin word “coaxare” which means “to wheedle” or “to flatter.” It was later adopted into French as “cagoller,” which then evolved into its modern form, cajoler.
In everyday French, cajoler is most commonly used in the Plus-que-parfait tense, which is the past perfect tense. This tense is used to describe an action that was completed before another past action.
Examples:
- J’avais cajolé mon chat avant de partir. (I had coaxed my cat before leaving.)
- Elle avait cajolé son fils pour qu’il mange ses légumes. (She had cajoled her son to eat his vegetables.)
- Nous avions cajolé nos voisins pour qu’ils nous prêtent leur voiture. (We had cajoled our neighbors to lend us their car.)
In each of these examples, the action of cajoling was completed before another past action, indicated by the use of the auxiliary verb “avoir” (had) in the Plus-que-parfait tense. In English, the translation would use the past perfect tense as well, such as “I had coaxed,” “She had cajoled,” and “We had cajoled.”
