Introduction to the verb déroger
The English translation of the French verb déroger is “to deviate”, “to depart from”, or “to derogate”. The infinitive form is pronounced as day-roh-zhay.
Déroger comes from the Latin word derogare, meaning “to annul” or “to detract”. It entered the French language in the 13th century and has since evolved to have several different meanings, including “to deviate from a rule or custom”, “to infringe upon a right or privilege”, and “to depart from a principle or belief”.
In everyday French, déroger is most often used in the Passé Antérieur tense, which is used to talk about actions that were completed before another past action. This tense is formed by using the auxiliary verb avoir or être in the Imparfait tense, followed by the past participle of the main verb.
